The protests are linked to occupation of the police station by an opposition group. On July 17, the armed opposition group calling themselves Sasna Dzrer seized the local police station and took several police officers hostage. Protesters are defending the opposition saying they are not terrorists.

During the demonstration, around 50 people were wounded and a few dozens were arrested.
Protesters demand the authorities to give food to the opposition that occupied the police station. Nikol Pashinian, a pro-opposition politician, provided food supplies.
The protests started when the authorities refused to deliver the provision to the opposition.
Protesters tried to break through a cordon. Officers had to hit back firing tear gas and stun grenades, while demonstrators were throwing stones and bottles.
