Trump dreams of buying Greenland

Donald Trump’s wild plans just keep getting better! Now, the newly elected US president is eyeing a new project that suggests buying Greenland.
Experts say this would be the biggest land grab in US history, topping the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, which nearly doubled America’s size.
Trump recently dusted off this idea by nominating PayPal co-founder Ken Howery as US ambassador to Denmark, which has controlled Greenland for about 300 years. “Owning, controlling Greenland is essential for 'national security and freedom throughout the World,” Trump declared.
Greenland, if added to the US collection, would massively increase the country’s land area. This would be a historic move even bigger than the Louisiana Purchase or the annexation of Texas in 1845. Trump’s Greenland deal would outshine Andrew Johnson’s 1867 purchase by miles.
Trump first floated this idea back in 2019 during his first term. Greenland, with its strategic location along North Atlantic shipping routes and key radar installations, caught his attention. However, Danish and Greenlandic officials rejected this idea.
Later, in 2020, White House aides and Treasury officials took a closer look. They even found the funds to kick things off. According to former Treasury official Thomas Danz, things were moving fast, but nothing materialized. Hopes that Joe Biden’s administration would pick up the baton fizzled out.
The key, experts say, lies in convincing the people of Greenland that becoming part of the US is in their best interest. Right now, Greenland’s economy leans heavily on a yearly $500 million grant from Denmark. That is 20% of its GDP and half the country’s budget.
Trump’s team believes joining the US could boost Greenland’s economy. A development plan is ready to roll, pending a vote and approval from Copenhagen’s parliament.
However, Trump’s grand vision hits a wall. Prime Minister Múte Egede insists that Greenland is theirs.
Not one to stop dreaming, Trump has other targets. He recently suggested the US might try to reclaim the Panama Canal, which President Jimmy Carter handed over in 1979. Panama’s president, unsurprisingly, was not thrilled.
